Richard was trained by the Royal Navy and retired in 1983 having qualified as an A2 Helicopter Instructor on Lynx, Gazelle, and Wessex types.
Subsequently he became the Managing Director of a Ship Yard in Southampton with 60 employees responsible for the refurbishment of Vosper Thorneycroft Fast Patrol Boat Brave Challenger. After the project was completed he returned to flying, primarily for Starspeed operating the Bell 206, Agusta 109 & Bell 222. During this period he also established and was the CEO of a Police Helicopter Support unit in Houston Texas and gained an FAA CPL(H) and FAA CFI.
On return to the UK he re-established his ties with Starspeed, qualified on the AS365 & EC155, then in 2007 became a Director and Shareholder in the company with Partners Gary Butcher & Ian Field.
